Dear Families and Friends

Last week our students enjoyed a visit from Warrawong Sanctuary and were able to get up close and interact with some beautiful native animals.  These ‘incursions’ enhance our teaching and learning program and provide greater access for all students to have meaningful new experiences.

Some of our senior students are currently on work placements and supported work experience in preparation for their post school pathways. Whilst the thought of leaving school may seem daunting it is also such an exciting time and our students are certainly ready when the time comes. The senior teaching team have a comprehensive program that is tailored to support the transition from school and this process is always implemented in consultation with families. The information evening on June 11th will be an opportunity to hear from a range of organisations that cater for students post-school and hopefully answer the many questions that arise as families consider what the next environment will be.

Catholic Special Schools Inc AGM
The yearly AGM is an opportunity for families and carers from St Patrick’s Special School and Our Lady of La Vang to hear the Annual Report from both schools.  This will be published on the schools’ websites by June 30th and will be available as a hard copy on request.

The AGM will be held on Monday May 27th at 7.30 pm, at Our Lady of La Vang.  All parents/carers are warmly invited to attend.

As you would have seen and heard in the media the cases of influenza are at their highest and other colds and viruses are rampant. I thank you for keeping your child home if they are at all unwell as this is the only way we can prevent cross infection in the school.

I felt very fortunate this week to have the opportunity to have a lunchtime game of UNO with Michael and enjoy the beautiful weather and leafy surroundings we have here at St Pat’s. Michael is quite a whiz at cards, so I was not overly successful but had a great time!

Kind regards

Cathy

Purple Class News

This week was the Purple and Green Class Assembly. The students in the Purple Class decided to showcase their knowledge from the semester’s science expeditions! As a class, we have been exploring the area of biological science and discovering just how many living things exist in the world around us. We have also been learning about the life cycles of living things and highlighting the similarities and differences to our own personal growth. The students in the Purple class decided to film a video about the butterfly life cycle and share their knowledge with the St. Patrick’s Community – they had a little help from The Very Hungry Caterpillar too!

As part of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), the Purple Class students have been participating in the investigation of the diversity of cultures, values, beliefs, and environments that exists between and within the countries of Asia. They have had the opportunity to expand their world knowledge and learn about the significance of environments and how places are represented geographically and how communities express themselves culturally.

We began the year by firstly learning about our own country of Australia; its early history, our states and territories, the capital cities, the flag, the food and significant landmarks using many web based resources and story books. The students made lamingtons to conclude our sessions about Australia. Each student made an individual passport and we have moved on to exploring Japan during term 2.

The girls have participated in lessons covering the map, the flag, the language and the food. Hiroko has been teaching us some commonly used words. We say “Konnichiwa’ (Hello) to each other every morning and “Sayonara” each afternoon.

In the Senior East Class we have been speaking about different types of animals in Science. We have discussed mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and finished our unit with invertebrates, which saw our students re-stock our worm farm. It was fantastic to observe our backboneless friends, who will turn our fruit scraps into fertiliser for our thriving winter vegetable garden.

The last week of our science unit also coincided with an incursion from Warrawong Sanctuary, where our students observed a range of native animals. This was a fantastic session and Warrawong is well worth a visit now they have re-opened their Mylor property to the public.
