Opening Prayer

This Sunday is the celebration of Pentecost. In Christian tradition it is considered the birthday of the Church, the time when the apostles received the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are so many ways we can feel a sense of ‘spirit.’ This can be in our work, our families and certainly the spirit we feel as a school community. This sense of spirit inspires everyone to share their gifts and talents with each other. We see this at our assemblies where our students showcase their joy of music, our seniors sharing their culinary skills making Banh Mi rolls each week and the work displayed in our front office to name just a few. Having a sense of spirit helps us to be active, effective, sustaining and encouraging in all that we do.

May the abundant Spirit of Generous radiance

Flow through, over, beneath

And above our world and our hearts

May the dancing Spirit’s infectious love

Swirl us into joy and freedom

May the gentle Spirit of warm hospitality

Spread welcome and healing in every corner of our being.

Amen

Quote from participant Jack:
‘I would never have learnt to love onion and garlic if it wasn’t for Pirie Street’

Every Tuesday a group of four senior students (Jack, Nhung, Angus, and Michael) make their way to CEG in Pirie Street. The students attend a commercial cookery course under the watchful eyes of qualified chefs. The competencies they are working toward form the basis of a Certificate II VET qualification in ‘Kitchen Operations’ (SIT20416). The students aim to complete the competencies over two years. This is the seventh year that we have offered this program to our senior students. They gain many lifelong skills, such as food hygiene, food preparation, knife skills, working with hot and cold substances, cooking safely and the importance of personal hygiene and cleaning up after yourself. And the meal at the end of the session is certainly worth the effort!

Our students have made some delectable dishes so far this year, including butter chicken, pizzas, sausage rolls, pad thai, yiros, duck stir fry, beef pho soup, banh mi rolls, fish and chips, salad, burgers and fries, spaghetti bolognaise, chicken risotto, spaghetti meatballs and muffins. Look out for the recipe calendar later this year!

This year has also seen the introduction of public transport training within this program too. Students catch the 147 bus to and from Pirie Street each Tuesday. They have easily learnt how to correctly use the metroCARD and have practised appropriate public behaviour. The inclement weather has not deterred them and they have also had to deal with the vagaries of public transport, such as late and early buses.

It is great to see students succeeding outside of the school context. This program greatly enhances students’ abilities and prepares them for life beyond school, as well as being socially rewarding as they mix with young apprentice chefs and members of the public. We have also had feedback from families saying that students’ palates have been expanded through this program. It is also great for families to get a taste of what students are making each week, provided the leftovers are shared!

We asked the students about Pirie St:

Michael said he loves catching the bus, cooking and eating.
Angus said chef Bhu and the ‘claw’ knife skill.
Nhung said meeting new people and trying new foods.
Jack said getting out of school, eating food, trying new foods and the bus trip.

From the Principal

Dear Families & Friends,

As a school we regularly review all our policies and procedures to ensure that we are a safe and productive learning environment for all students. In light of these ongoing reviews, I want to share with you our bell times and the supervision processes that we have in place.

I fully appreciate the many challenges that families can face in busy households on school days so there is no concern that there will be times that students will arrive late. One of our safety Risk Assessments states that our student access gates are locked between the hours below and our School Registration is granted on a designated number of minutes of teaching time of which I must provide evidence of. Therefore, we have the following procedures in place:

Morning 8.30am – 8.50am staff on duty in each area being Junior, Middle and Senior Yards. The duty staff member will always be wearing a yellow high visibility vest so if they are still in the yard after 8.50am they can open the gates. However, all other staff are required to be supervising their other students in the class and sometimes the yard. If the duty person is not at the gate, students who arrive after this time will need to come through the front office. In some extenuating circumstances you may call the front office if you require assistance at the Warwick Ave gate if no duty staff are there.

A staff member will come and collect the student but is required to return to class immediately to again ensure we have our correct ratios in class. If you have information you need to share with the teacher, then please send an email or message to them.

Afternoon 3.00 – 3.20pm staff member on duty in each area wearing a yellow high visibility vest.

If an unavoidable early departure has been arranged, then students will be brought to the office and the class staff will provide communication via the diary or email, so they can return to class promptly.

Just a reminder that we do have the new 10-minute parking area in Union Street for you to use.

SAFETY ALERT

No students, parents or carers can enter the front gate on Union Street until 8.30am when a staff member is on duty. Due to the large electric gates and the possibility of buses returning at this time the area can become unsafe. At 8.30am, the students can enter straight into the junior yard.

The care and safety of all students, families and staff is paramount to us so we greatly appreciate your support with these matters.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Kind regards,

Cathy

In Religion and MITIOG the Junior Class has been learning about our senses. Our noses to smell with, our eyes to see with, our ears to hear with, our mouth to taste with and our hands to touch with. Students have been engaging in a variety of sensory activities to explore these senses. Most recently we have been focussing on smell. We have set up a ‘smell’ box which includes jars with the scents peppermint, vanilla, lavender, cinnamon, coconut, maple syrup and rosemary. Students enjoyed smelling these and communicating about the smells they liked and the smells they disliked.  We are all created in the image of God and valuable and worthy of love. We thank God for the gift of our bodies and our senses.

This Term we have connected with the Little Boho Flower Co at Dulwich. Hayley, the owner of the florist, is saving any flowers and greenery from the week and donating them to the school. We plan to use these items in classes to support learning with natural resources. Our first delivery was used to make a flower arrangement for the front office. Two students from the Purple Class created the flower arrangement by collecting the vase, cutting stems, placing the flowers in the vase and filling it with water. This week two students from the Senior Class arranged the flowers. We are looking forward to our next delivery!

Scholastic Book Club

Dear Parents and Friends,
A scholastic book catalogue went home recently and here are some tips for it:
  1. There are some good deals on books. Remember to choose books that your child/young person will enjoy, to foster their love of reading and language. It may be a book they can read, or that you read to them.
  2. There is no expectation on whether you buy something or not.
  3. If you would like to place an order please go to www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP and register. When you put in your child’s first name and initial it will then ask for the school postcode, which is 5065. On the next line type a few letters for St Patrick’s Special School, e.g. St Pat and the name will come up. When your order is complete the books will be sent to the school for you, and you don’t need to return anything to us.
  4. Scholastic give the school credit for book club orders, so we can use that to buy more books for school.
Happy browsing….. Jo Millar - Speech Pathologist
