Term 3 ~ Issue 12 ~ 30 August 2019
Opening Prayer

God longs for God
and uses us,
rises in us . . .
becomes in us.
Let us be silent,
a quiet dough

where God moves
into every pore . . .
where God lives
as God pleases.

Let us rise simply,
a quiet dough.

From the Principal

Dear Families and Friends

You will see from this newsletter that we have so many great things happening at St Pat’s. We have had several opportunities in recent times to connect with other Catholic Schools. As you know we had students visit Kildare College last term and this term students have been to St Ignatius Junior School for Book Week and Rostrevor College for the World Cup Soccer Tournament. These school visits enable students to access the community and practise the skills they learn through the curriculum at St Patrick’s.  Our students genuinely enjoy interacting and building meaningful connections with peers their own age. We value these initiatives from other schools and will continue to develop the opportunities for these experiences, to enhance social participation in the community. The students engaging with the STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) continue to amaze me and there is a great article in this newsletter about the use of BeeBots.

This weekend is Father’s Day, a time to celebrate all the special men that make a difference in the lives of others. I wish all the fathers, grandfathers, uncles and friends a wonderful day on Sunday.

Kind regards

Cathy

Occupational Therapy News

This Term we have Occupational Therapy Student, Tom Walker, on placement with us. One of Tom’s focuses has been to consider the hall setup and availability for Junior Primary Students. Tom has done a fantastic job in considering the purpose of the session, different interests of the students and using the existing equipment to create zones in the hall. Tom has set up mazes for students to walk through and plan their way out, tactile paths to explore and vertical learning areas for students to draw whilst kneeling or standing. This space is then used by different students throughout the day and the Senior West Class pack up as part of their daily heavy work routine!

Please feel free to come and say hello to Tom if you see him in the yard.

Special Olympics’ Soccer World Cup

On Tuesday, 27th August, a group of 9 students from the middle and senior clusters represented 'Argentina' at the Special Olympics’ Soccer World Cup. After an uneventful trip on the team bus, we arrived at Rostrevor College, earnestly awaiting our fixtures against Costa Rica, Japan, Belgium and Poland. We certainly had a tough pool against some soccer powerhouses! We won two games, all of which were even contests for the most part.

Michael lead the way with some of the goal scoring, while Melissa and Scarlett L were all over the field and soaked up the experience. Alex and Jack took several kick-ins from the boundary line and Isaiah displayed some great team-building skills. Thomas and Nhung were seemingly everywhere and Gemma played a vital role with some impressive goalkeeping. Other highlights included a fantastic sausage sizzle for lunch and several of our students being interviewed over the PA during the break!

A major celebration was the manner in which our students engaged throughout the day and showcased their teamwork. We played by the rules and were quick to shake hands after each contest. Well done to all of our participants and supporters.

Scott Marshall & Marie Giannakos – Senior Class Teachers

Vaccination Catchup Program - *Community Information

"The School Immunisation Program for 2019 includes Meningococcal ACWY (Nimenrix) for all year 10 students only. Until 31 December this year, young people aged 15 to under 20 years of age are eligible for a government-funded Meningococcal ACWY catchup program.

As your school’s immunisation provider, Eastern Health Authority are able to offer this vaccination service to students in other year levels (within the relevant age bracket) for free.

Meningococcal is a rare, but very serious, often life-threatening disease with adolescents aged between 15 and 20 years at increased risk. Available vaccination for Meningococcal includes protection from B strain (Bexsero – provided at year 10 and year 11 at school) and A, C, W & Y strains (Nimenrix). W & Y strains are becoming more prevalent in Australia, with Meningococcal W having a higher fatality rate than other types of Meningococcal disease.

We strongly encourage those eligible for this vaccination to visit one of our clinics in order to protect themselves from this disease.

Book now online or phone 8132 3600 for further information."
