May 31, 2020 is Pentecost Sunday, Pentecost comes from the Greek word “Pentecoste” meaning 50th day. Pentecost Sunday is one of the most prominent days in the Christian calendar. It is often referred to as the “BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH”

It marks the day when the HOLY SPIRIT descended upon the Apostles, who had been living in fear for fifty days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

On Pentecost, the HOLY SPIRIT came down visibly on the Apostles. He gave them the power to speak in strange tongues to the crowds that came to Jerusalem for that Feast. He also transformed them, from selfish and timid people to giants of courage and faith.

From The Principal

Dear Families,

Well after such a time of uncertainty we are perhaps returning to whatever our new normal might be. As we see some restrictions being lifted in the community, we are also reviewing what is in place here at school so that we can move towards the students accessing the community again. However, we are maintaining the highest level of vigilance around cleaning, visitors on site and social distancing as much as is possible.  Thank you for your support in keeping students away if they are unwell as this is a significant protective factor for the health and wellbeing of our school community.
COVID-19 has had undeniable and shocking consequences on people’s lives. It is very easy to feel a complete sense of despair. However, there are some positive gifts as well, and as things improve it is timely to think about some of these.

The Environment – Carbon emissions are down globally. The planet has been able to rejuvenate.

Connectedness – The strong sense of community and social cohesion. An increase in volunteers.

Innovation – Businesses reinventing themselves, who would have thought gin distilleries would be producing hand sanitisers!

One of the positives that I would like to expand on is how education has been reimagined. Students have been learning remotely, engaging in their learning and various therapies through Zoom and other digital platforms. Teachers have expanded their skills in the use of ICT and there is greater recognition and appreciation of the role that everyone plays in the education of a child. It certainly hasn’t always been easy but, there is still much to smile about. During these changing times we as a staff have also been exploring how we can develop and enhance what we do to continue to improve outcomes for students. One of the catalysts for this was the release of the new Catholic Education SA Personalised Plan for Learning (PPL). This is a comprehensive document that will replace the existing IEP and we will be fully implementing this in second semester. Following on from this we have also redesigned our school reports which we will be using this semester. The reports will look very different and we are introducing the use of the Seesaw application next term to compliment how we provide you with feedback in real time.  We have strengthened the way we design learning based on each students’ capabilities and to top it all off, we have our new logo ready to launch.

I will be providing more detail on all of these new and exciting innovations in the coming weeks.

In closing I think the most important gift that COVID-19 has given us is a true sense of appreciation and gratitude. Our freedoms, family life, work, leisure and connections have all taken on a new perspective and our ability to be better and more resilient human beings has flourished.

Stay safe and well.
Kind regards,
Cathy

Purple Class News

The Purple Class have been talking about Mary, our Mother, who we remember in the month of May each year. We learned about Mary’s Altar and decided to create one in her honour. The students were very excited to put the altar together in our classroom sacred space, using Mary’s colours of blue and white. We have a cross, a picture of Mary chosen by the students, a white ribbon, a blue and white cloth, the Hail Mary prayer that we are learning, a candle, and Isaiah very kindly offered to bring some beautiful white roses from home to complete our altar. We think it looks great!  We remember that Mary loves us all and she wants us to live as Jesus would like us to.

The subject offers a parallel program based on what students would be doing in a post-school community placement. Cooking is often one aspect of a community program, and the students in the Senior West class have been cooking up a storm. This week we made pikelets, which everyone helped to make, and they were delicious.
